We get a lot of lobbying material. Much of it is clearly part of a mass mailing. Some is well targeted. Some is not. I have just received a letter which begins: ‘Dear Lord Norton, Given your interest in sports…’. Next thing you know, I’ll be receiving a letter saying ‘Given your interest in Country and Western music..’.
Table tennis is a sport surely
Croft: Indeed it is, but the reference was plural!
Plural.. mere technicality!
PS I must say Lord Avebury is taking his commitment to blogging above and beyond normal duty

Croft: I agree. Lord Avebury is going into possibly a little too much detail, not least for the squeamish…
LN: I suppose it all depends on your sense of how you place illness in your life. Some people drop off the face of the earth when ill. Treating illness as just a part of ones normal life seems quite a sensible attitude.
Croft: Indeed, but showing it in detail….
There are always solutions, though; for example, one could take the simple step of placing a disclaimer at the top of one’s more House-like posts…

Ooh, who wrote to you? Name and shame!
To be fair:
1) the word ‘sports’ isn’t strictly limited to a plural of singular sporting competitions – you can be a ‘sports fan’ and not necessarily love more than one discipline.
2) as you do walking for fitness (not just getting from A to B) and occasional table tennis, that does count as 2 modes of exercise…
Mind you, it seems the organisation writing didn’t do its research first. Challenge them to a match on one of the new public table tennis tables set up for London 2012!
My impression was that the plural form of the word (in this context, at least) was an Americanism…
On another note, I would advise Lord Norton to avoid in the future such offhand remarks about the Country music lobby, which, as most Westminster insiders know, is extremely powerful.
The Duke of Waltham: As long as the Country music lobby isn’t powerful within Westminster…
“As long as the Country music lobby isn’t powerful within Westminster”.
They would be but they`ve had to go home to the wilds cos their dog has died, the wife has left them, the house is being repossessed and the Feds found their still.
CRAiG B; And the table-tennis tables are to be found at?
