What’s wrong with this?

Here’s a quick quiz question for informed readers.

A recent media report claimed ‘Caroline Lucas is the first Green parliamentarian to sit in the Mother of Parliaments’.

This short sentence contains no less than two errors.  Can you identify both of them?

Lord Beaumont predates her by a number of years.

Hmm, The Mother of Parliaments was refering to England, not the UK Parliament?

  2. John says:

First that the British Parliament cannot really claim to be the mother of parliaments. There are several claims to that crown, and Britian’s probably isn’t the strongest.

Also, Caroline Lucas is the first member of the Commons, but she is not the first British Green parliamentarian. The late Lord Beaumont of Whitley, I think, is the holder of this honour.

    I know!

Firstly there was a Green party Lord who died only a few years back.

Secondly the parliament is not the mother of parliaments as there have been parliaments in existence for longer such as the Isle of Man and Iceland.

    I think that’s it anyway.

    Dear Lord Norton,

I thought that the late Lord Beaumont of Whitley was the first Green parliamentarian and also thought the quote was ‘England is the Mother of Parliaments’ rather than Parliament is the ‘Mother of Parliaments’.

    Wannabeexpat.

  5. Teithiwr says:

Cynog Dafis was elected to the House of Commons on a joint Green / Plaid Cymru ticket in 1992

  6. macarthursmutterings says:

She is not “green” but Caucasian?
