Debating the riots

The Evening Standard, among other media, has reported that Parliament is being recalled on Thursday.  Parliament is not being recalled.  I had a text message this afternoon letting me know that the House of Commons was being recalled.  A few minutes later I got a text confirming that the House of Lords was not.  I am not sure why not, not least given the members with knowledge of policing.

The media are reporting that the riots have been facilitated by the use of Twitter.  I am not sure that pervasive television coverage has not also played a similar role.

  1. Frank W. Summers III says:

    Lord Norton,
Both I and my family members have traveled extensively. Some of that travel has been in locales known for violence and danger. It is a bit hard to take, however, that some of my youngest family members are passing through the city on one of the only days in my life in which it has made a claim to being a really unsafe and violent city. Of course, the bus and train bombings and the tuition riots make it all comprehensible but still we are accustomed to placing the stops made in London in the mental and unspoken column labeled “very safe” in a world where most stops for Americans would need some other label.

I of course feel for those who have actually been hurt already but cannot help feeling more concerned for my own. The feelings are not unfamiliar only the combination of feelings with the location…

    • Lord Norton says:

Frank W. Summers III: It is important to remember that there are about 7 million people who live in Greater London and those causing the trouble constitute 0.001 per cent, or fewer, of the population.

        Lord Norton,
I am aware of that. I also am aware that no Americans have been injured. However it is a general rule that if one is carrying American made backpacks, wearing baseball caps, cowboy boots or speaking American ENglish in a group then trouble will be attracted in almost any context outside the USA. In this group there are many unseasoned travlers with my family. However, all reports are of them having a pleasant and peaceful time so far…

“Parliament is not being recalled.” One question answered, at least.

As the HoL has not been recalled it reminds us that it is a revising chamber rather than that of the talking shop more readily aligned with the characteristic half truths of rolling news.

    • Lord Norton says:

ladytizzy: We have the advantage of members with experience of policing as well as of the troubles in Northern Ireland (and elsewhere) and of the problems associated with bringing in the army.
