After long and detailed deliberations, and much reflection (oh yes), I can now announce the winner of the latest caption competition. The winning entry is that of Sheldon Howcroft with:
Hull’s latest “Boy Band” gather for a practice before facing the judges for the new series of “Britain’s got Talent”
There was stiff competition, but it won by a nose. I shall now have to think of an appropriate prize. The winner already has the best prize than one could wish for – a fine education in the Politics Department at Hull University (see Class of ’83) – but I will see what else can be offered (and that will fit neatly in an envelope to be sent through the post).
I gather a Mr Richard Woodward planned to send in an appropriate caption but was too tied up dealing with university admissions.
Sheldon Howcroft at Norton’s Olympus is crowned.
Hull’s pride adds the wit laurel to whom he’s gowned.
Ever “for originality or nepotism” will we here wonder.
“Lo, Shel done how?” Croft will in good time write.
“Done better than any!” The baron will write under.
Of these great battles in electronic type I write.
Napoleon, Wellington, Ceasar of current plunder.
What hours spent in titanic combat for a tea,
I have only a chocolate box to comfort me.
Now mighty Sheldon a Grendel’s arm keeps,
“See my wit as baleful Summers weeps…”
Excellent!
Merci!
That’s the first thing I have won in ages, I am still into cycling and race time trials, but my days of winning are well and truly over. I used to have a season ticket for Hull City but gave that up when Hull got into the Premiership(they haven’t won many games since).
My Daughter Sophie has just got into Sheffield University to read English and Linguistics, now I bet that makes you feel old Lord Norton. Cheers
sheldon Howcroft: You may care to e-mail me your address so that I can arrange for your prize to be sent (a framed picure of the Class of ’83?!). I fear it is some years now since a new student bounded up to me to declare ‘You taught my father’. He said it with some enthuasiasm, which is not necessarily how the news was received!
Fine university, Sheffield.

Just completed 25 years of teaching. One more weeks holiday left. From September I will be working in 3 different schools, don’t know if that means I am so good other schools want me, or 1 school can’t cope with me full time!!!!!
Um, this should be removed, asap.
